San Francisco, being on the West Coast is a gateway to the Orient much like New York City has been the port of entry for millions from Europe. Chinese immigration began in earnest in the 1850s during the Gold Rush. These many immigrants settled in the current area that constitutes Chinatown, which has been traditionally defined by the neighborhoods of North Beach, and Telegraph Hill as bound by Bush Street, Taylor Street, Bay Street, and the Bay.
